Breast Augmentation
Technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast enlargement is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. The implant is inserted through a small incision and positioned either behind the muscle or beneath the actual tissue of the breast. When the implant is placed beneath the muscle, it may have a more natural appearance. Wrinkling in the implant is also more visible when implant is placed in front of the muscle.
Breast enlargement takes approximately one to two hours. This procedure will be done here in our facility, under general anesthesia, by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. You can go home within an hour of the surgery.

Implants are either positioned in front or behind the muscle. Following surgery you will wear a "bandeau" (for 14 days, 24/7, then 2 more weeks during the day only). In most cases, no bra is needed for 6 weeks. Under -wire bras are usually to be avoided except for special occasions. Sutures usually come out in 5-7 days. Although you will be out of bed on the same day as your surgery, you will be advised when you can resume you daily routine. Light exercise, such as walking, is permitted at one week post-op. More vigorous exercise at two weeks, you may return to your regular exercise schedule at three weeks. To permit progress you should avoid lifting weights for three weeks. Driving is permitted after 5-7 days and whenever you feel comfortable. You may return to work within 3-5 days.
You will discuss the eventual size of the breast with the Doctor in the initial consultation. Your new breasts should look and feel natural. After the procedure most women adapt quickly to their new shape and rarely give a second thought to their implants. They will not affect fertility, pregnancy or your ability to breast-feed. Since the purpose of the procedure is to make, your breasts look natural breast scars are kept as small as possible and usually made either under the nipple or under the crease of the breast.

In November of 2006, the FDA approved MemoryGel tm implants for breast augmentation and reconstruction. After reviewing years of research concerning silicone-gel filled implants, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found that “Evidence suggests diseases or conditions such as connective tissue diseases, cancer, neurological diseases or other systemic complaints or conditions are no more common in women with breast implants than in women without implants.”

This is less common when the implant is beneath the muscle. The implants have a more natural appearance when positioned behind the muscle in someone with a small breast and not much fat.
